iodine, iodine status, iodine deficiency, excessive iodine intake, iodized salt, algae, seaweedAbstract
The purpose of our study is to objectify scientifically based information on potential risks and adverse effects of excessive consumption of organic iodine from traditional natural sources, as well as synthetic iodine salts. The results of our research have been presented in two consecutive publications. The first article discusses current WHO indicators for assessing iodine status, sources of risks associated with excessive iodine consumption (including radioactive iodine), and the current iodine status of adults, children, and pregnant women in Europe (according to WHO data).
Our study has revealed that the problem of iodine deficiency remains relevant in most countries with a high level of medical care. The issue of the appropriateness of consuming iodine in the form of various dietary supplements, dietary supplements, and specialized nutrition is of great concern, as the consumption of iodized salt alone is insufficient to meet adequate needs. Despite the lack of clinical evidence for the effectiveness and safety of the majority of algae-based dietary supplements available in the domestic market, the demand for them remains high and is even increasing. This is due, among other things, to the low bioavailability of potassium iodide and iodate, their instability. The WHO's main indicators for assessing iodine status cannot be considered perfect.
